The 27th Fighter Squadron is the oldest fighter squadron in the U.S. Air Force and was organized on 15 June 1917. The 27th saw its first combat in 1918 during World War I in the European theater. Aircraft flown by the 27th during World War I included the Nieuport 28, F-1 Camel and the Spad XIII. During World War II, from October 1942 to May 1945, the 27th participated in the European and Mediterranean theaters flying the P-38 Lightning. From 1950 until 1971 the 27th flew from a variety of Northeast U.S. bases, operating F-86s, F-94s, F-102s and F-106s. In 1971 the 27th began training F-4E Phantom II crews at MacDill AFB, Florida. In July 1975 the 27 TFS transferred from MacDill to Langley AFB, Virginia and became the first combat ready F-15 squadron in the Air Force. In August 1990 the squadron deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM. The 27th spent 7 months there and successfully flew over 7,500 combat missions before returning home in March 1991. In 2003 the 27th Fighter Squadron was announced as the first operational squadron to fly the Raptor - a continuation of the squadron\'s historical legacy. The 27th Fighter Squadron today stands as a cohesive combat experienced team ready for any call to support our nation\'s security requirements. Air-Dominance, Anytime, Anywhere!
