HMS RICHMOND is the tenth Type 23 Duke Class Frigate to be commissioned into the Royal Navy. An advanced, multi-role surface combatant, she has robust warfighting capability in the air, surface and sub-surface domains. Fitted with the world’s most advanced towed array sonar and capable of operating either a Lynx or Merlin helicopter, she boasts a formidable anti-submarine warfare capability. Her weapon systems also include the latest GWS 26 SWMLU Vertical Launch Sea Wolf Missile System, the GWS 60 Harpoon Surface to Surface Missile System, the Mk.8 Mod 1 4.5 inch gun and the Magazine Torpedo Launch System. She is the seventh Royal Navy warship to proudly bear the name RICHMOND, her immediate predecessor being an escort vessel of the Town Class transferred from the US Navy during WWII. She has five battle honours including Quebec 1759 and Arctic 1942. The current HMS RICHMOND was launched on 6 April 1993 by Lady Hill-Norton, the ship’s sponsor, accepted by the Royal Navy on 8 November 1994 and commissioned on 22 June 1995. In October 2011, HMS Richmond entered her third SSP(D) at Devonport Royal Dockyard, where a comprehensive multi-million pound overhaul of her sensors, weapons, propulsion and hull was undertaken by Babcock. She re-entered the Fleet on 10 August 2012.
