Flying distinctive British-built fast-jets, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, aims to enthral and inspire people with a display of speed and precision. Acknowledged as one of the world's premier aerobatic teams, the Squadron showcases the excellence of the Royal Air Force and represents the United Kingdom both at home and overseas. By the beginning of 2017 – the team's 53rd season – the Red Arrows had completed more than 4,800 displays in 57 countries. China became the latest addition to the global list during a historic tour of Asia and the Middle East, promoting British interests, in late 2016. The Red Arrows consists of 11 pilots, nine of whom form the display team, with each having previous fast-jet operational experience flying the Tornado or the Typhoon – enabling the Royal Air Force to secure the nation's skies. Known as the Blues because of the colour of their display coveralls, the team's 110-strong support team include skilled engineers, drivers, suppliers, public relations staff and other personnel. Many of the Blues have existing frontline experience or will go on to complete operations after leaving the Red Arrows. Based at Royal Air Force Scampton in Lincolnshire, the Red Arrows fly the BAE Systems Hawk TMk1A.
