Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1432 - 168592 '600', E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron ONE TWO FIFE 'VAW-125'. The U.S. Navy's Premier Command and Control Squadron, and pioneers of the Hawkeye community. VAW-125, originally the “Torch Bearers”, now the “Tigertails”, was commissioned in 1968, as the first squadron to operationally employ the E-2B. The Squadron’s first assignments were with Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3) aboard USS SARATOGA (CV-3) from Norfolk, VA. In December 1976 VAW-125 became the first squadron to earn the Battle “E” award, the “Golden Anchor”, and the Safety “S” award in a single year. In 1981, the Tigertails were the first VAW squadron assigned to Counter Narcotics Tasking. Throughout the 1980s the squadron deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, defending the Carrier Strike Group by controlling fighter aircraft that destroyed two in-bound Libyan MiGs. In 1985, Tigertail Air Intercept Controllers convinced the hijackers of an Egyptian airliner to allow the plane to land at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Italy. In august of 1990 VAW-125 flew continuously in support of Operation DESERT SHIELD and in 1991 Tigertail controllers vectored two F/A-18s toward two MiGs threatening the Carrier Strike Group; resulting in the only Navy, fixed-wing, air-to-air kills of DESERT STORM. Closing out the 20th century, VAW-125 assisted in the combined seizure of over 20,000 pounds of cocaine – the largest Atlantic seizure in Seventh District Coast Guard history. Within hours of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, squadron personnel were embarked at sea, aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73), in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE over New York City. In the first years of the new millennium VAW-125 became the first squadron to receive E-2C Hawkeye 2000 aircraft as they continued to ferociously deploy, ending the decade providing humanitarian assistance to the Earthquake ravaged island of Haiti, and launching the first all-female Hawkeye crew in to combat. From 2010–2012 the Tigertails completed three back-to-back deployments and exercises BEACON FLASH and MALABAR. VAW-125 was the first squadron to deploy with E-2D Aircraft in 2015, completing an around-the world cruise with CVW-1 aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71) in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. Upon returning to Norfolk the squadron aggressively participated in training exercises including GREEN FLAG, BLACKDART, VIGILENT SHIELD, BOLD ALLIGATOR, and RAZOR TALON. In January 2017, VAW-125 flew five E-2D from Norfolk, VA, to San Diego, CA, onto the USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) for a ride to their new home port of Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan. The Tigertails are currently attached to Forward Deployed Naval Forces, U.S. SEVENTH FLEET, conducting operations to defend freedom of navigation, and support regional allies with increased readiness, in the boldest traditions of Joint and Combined Mission superiority.
