Description
Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 28CU - XV168, Buccaneer S2B, 12 Squadron, RAF Honington.
Formed at Netheravon on 14 February 1915, 12 Squadron moved to France in September 1915 for bombing and reconnaissance duties on the Western Front. From early 1916 the Squadron confined its activities to reconnaissance moving to Germany after the war before disbanding in July 1922. It reformed as a bomber squadron at Northolt on 1 April 1923 equipped with D.H.9As but these were soon replaced by Fawns, which in turn gave way to Foxes, Harts and Hinds. No. 12 was the only squadron to fly the Fox, which inspired the squadron badge. Fairey Battles were received in February 1938, the Squadron taking these aircraft to France at the outbreak of World War II for offensive and later defensive duties. Returning to the U.K. in June 1 940 it took part in night attacks on the French Channel ports. In November 1940, now part of Bomber Command, 12 Squadron re-armed with Wellingtons converting to Lancasters two years later. After the war Lincolns were received in 1946 and Canberras in April 1952. These were flown in the Suez campaign in 1956 from bases in Malta. The Squadron disbanded on 13 July 1961 but reformed again on 1 July 1962 at Coningsby with Vulcans as part of the V-bomber force, moving to Cottesmore in November 1964 where it disbanded on 31 December 1967. No. 12 re-formed at Honington on 1 October 1969 as the R.A.F.’s first Buccaneer maritime strike squadron.
