Bristow Helicopters has a long history of providing civilian helicopter Search and Rescue, beginning in 1971 when operating Sikorsky S55s at RAF Manston, Kent. Bristow Helicopters Limited was awarded the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) contract to deliver Search and Rescue - Helicopter (SAR-H) services to Her Majesty’s Coastguard. Building on the UK military SAR legacy, Bristow began delivering the service on 1 April 2015. Operating from ten strategic locations around the United Kingdom, Bristow UKSAR provides the world’s first commercial delivery of state-provisioned all-weather SAR helicopter service. The Leonardo Helicopters AW189 aircraft is flown from UKSAR bases in Inverness, Prestwick, Lydd, Lee-on-Solent and St Athan, while the larger Sikorsky S92A aircraft is operated from Sumburgh, Stornoway, Caernarfon, Humberside and Newquay.
