Description

Squadron Prints Lithograph No. 1648CU - ZZ415, Wildcat HMA2, Wildcat Maritime Force, RNAS Yeovilton.

Based at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, the Wildcat Maritime Force (WMF) is responsible for the frontline deployment of the Royal Navy’s Wildcat HMA2 Maritime Attack Helicopters. The Force comprises two Squadrons; 815 Naval Air Squadron which is tasked with frontline Maritime Interdiction and Ships’ Embarked Flights, and 825 Naval Air Squadron which performs the Training and Conversion roles. 815 Naval Air Squadron is responsible for up to 20 Flights deployed at sea in one of Her Majesty’s Ships or Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, providing aviation support to the Fleet. The AW159 Wildcat is the newest generation of multi role helicopters operated by the Royal Navy and is a lightweight, versatile helicopter, capable of all-weather operations, delivering outstanding military capability in support of maritime, coastal and land operations, force protection and maritime strike. Most recently the Force has introduced a new missile system, the Thales Martlet, as part of the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon (FASGW) programme, most recently deployed with the Carrier Strike Group on its maiden operational deployment. 825 Naval Air Squadron is the newer of the WMF’s two Squadrons, with a proud history including World War II attacks against the German Fleet during Operation Fuller, otherwise known as the Channel Dash, participation in the attack on the German Battleship Bismarck in 1941 and more recently during the Falklands War in 1982. The Squadron is now responsible for training aircrew and engineers to fly, operate and maintain both the Wildcat HMA2 as well as the Wildcat AH1 fleet, the latter also being based at Yeovilton although under Army Air Corps command.
