No. 83 Group RAF was formed on 1st April 1943, becoming one of the main elements of the Allied Second Tactical Air Force supporting 21st Army Group during the 1944-45 campaign in north-western Europe. Disbanded in April 1946, reformed in Germany in July 1952 and then disbanded once again in June 1958, the Group was re-formed as No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group on 1st April 2006 to command the Royal Air Force contribution to operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East. In August 2013, the threat of conflict with Syria saw an extension of the 83 EAG mission to include the Defence of UK interests in Cyprus with Typhoon, Tristar, Sentry AEW1 and tactical control elements deployed to the island in an expanded 83 EAG Joint Operating Area which extended across 2000 miles. Since September 2014, the Group has been at the heart of the UK contribution to the fight against Da’esh in Iraq and Syria – Operation SHADER. From the Mediterranean to the Gulf of Oman, 83 EAG supports and executes air operations across the spectrum of warfighting, exercises and regional engagement in support of national, bilateral and coalition objectives. We take pride and purpose from our forebears and our motto: ‘A Deux Plus Forts’ – Two are Stronger than One.
