405 Squadron has been a leader since its formation as the first RCAF Bomber Squadron at Driffield, Yorkshire, England on 23 April 1941 flying the Vickers Wellington. On 19 April 1943, 405 Squadron was transferred to No. 8 (Pathfinder) Group and flew the Handley Page Halifax and Avro Lancaster aircraft from RAF Station Gransden Lodge, Bedfordshire, England until 25 May 1945. In April 1950, 405 Squadron was reformed at Greenwood, as a Maritime Patrol Squadron and flew the Avro Lancaster, Lockheed Neptune, Canadair Argus, and Lockheed CP-140 Aurora. The squadron’s primary combat roles continue to be ASW and ASUW, in recent years an evolution to peacetime roles seen 405 Squadron take on support to the RCMP, Fisheries and Oceans, Sovereignty and Northern Patrols, Search and Rescue, and the United Nations.
